DD(X) Land Based Test Facility Goddard Space Flight Center
The project is the DD(X) Land Based Engineering Test Facility. The project required the site to be raised for a finished floor elevation +3.66 meters, msl, which required about 2.4 meters of structural fill to be placed. The building isa multistory steel framed structure with floors composed of both steel plate and concrete. The exterior ismetal sided. The first floor is a concrete slab resting on grade beams. The "Mission Data Center" is a two story structure. The special purpose deckhouse "Technical Test Center" is nine stories. This encloses various antenna arrays with associated equipment. This is essentially a nine story tower with a deckhouse at the top. Structural loads were 44.5 kilonewtons per linear meter for walls and approximately 267 to 1335 kilonewtons for columns. Overall building dimensions are about 32.5 meters by 42.5 meters. A small bridge was constructed to cross a ditch to connect the site to Island Road. Abutments for this bridge carry 130 kilonewtons per linear meter. Other aspects of the project include an asphalt or gravel parking lot with a concrete apron around the building. A wetland mitigation area was also be included off site towards the northern end of the island.
